What Are Green Coffee Beans?

green coffee beans

Most of us cannot function without our morning fix of coffee, however, we usually think about whether we should consume coffee for its benefits or cut it off since it has high levels of caffeine content which is not a good thing. But have you ever thought of a healthy version of coffee?

Green coffee beans are raw coffee seeds of coffee cherries that have been separated and processed and to be roasted. Most people don’t enjoy consuming these raw coffee beans because they have a bitter and acid flavor, however, similar to green tea, green vegetables, and everything green, green coffee has a lot of health benefits.

The chlorogenic acid found in green coffee beans is reduced significantly during the roasting process that is why we find that green coffee beans contain a higher level of this acid compared to regular, roasted coffee beans.

This chlorogenic acid is a natural antioxidant that has lots of health benefits; it can help lowering blood pressure, reduce fasting blood sugar levels and insulin and glucose spikes, and it is even perfect to help in weight loss.

People tend to consume green coffee beans to help them burn fat without having to exercise or follow a tough diet, however, there is no real scientific evidence to support most of these claims and uses.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GREEN COFFEE BEANS

If u ask anyone about their opinions on whether you can grind green coffee beans and brew unroasted green coffee, their reply will probably be no, they taste awful, they are dense and hard to grind, they will damage your grinder, etc. However, green coffee beans have many benefits for our health that you may want to try next time.

Green coffee is highly rich in antioxidants, namely chlorogenic acid, which has many positive effects on our health; it can reduce the risk of some chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions, and high blood pressure.

Moreover, organic green coffee is considered a natural detoxification element that works by cleansing our liver from toxins and harmful cholesterol. These beans also contain Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), Epigallocatechin Gallate, and Theophylline compounds, which are responsible for delaying signs of aging like wrinkles and preventing our skin cells from getting damaged, and keeping it fresh and soft.

In addition to these health benefits, green coffee beans have been proven effective in burning fat. It works by reducing the release of excessive glucose in our bloodstream, which drives the body to start burning stored fats to reach the basic glucose level. This way, it boosts our metabolism and helps to burn extra fat.

Although green coffee beans are beneficial for our health, this form of coffee can also have some serious side effects such as sleep disturbances, anxiety and it can even affect your bone health. Plus, unlike roasted coffee beans, unroasted green coffee bean contains more caffeine, that can lead to other problems if not taken in moderation.

How to Grind Green Coffee Beans?

Unlike roasted coffee beans, Green coffee beans are, very hard, dense, and contain some rest of moisture what makes them very challenging to grind. However, it is not impossible of course! You just need to find the right technique that works for you.

Here are three popular methods to grind green coffee beans at home:

METHOD1: GRIND YOUR GREEN COFFEE BEANS USING A GRINDER

The first step is choosing the right grinder. Unfortunately, most coffee grinders used for grinding regular roasted coffee beans are not suitable for grinding raw green coffee beans. Whether it is a manual grinder or an electric one, a stone or a ceramic grinder, a burr or blade grinder, it can suffer damage from even the first grinding attempt, that is why you should be really careful.  However, if you have the time, energy, and the proper equipment in your kitchen, you can still grind green coffee beans.

Because of the moisture, pre-roasted coffee beans contain a lot of water which will ruin your electric grinder; therefore, you should use a hand grinder to grind them. Plus, a normal ceramic burr grinder might not work well to grind these tough beans, so it is better to use a steel burr to do the job. Just make sure you clean your machine thoroughly after use.

METHOD2: GRIND YOUR GREEN COFFEE BEANS USING A BLENDER

Using a blender is another easy and effective method to grind raw green coffee beans, just make sure you don’t throw them in on the full power setting.

Start by grinding one tablespoon of beans at a time and blend them on the pulse setting.

METHOD3: GRIND GREEN COFFEE BEANS USING A MORTAR AND PESTLE

If you care about your coffee mills or if you are nervous about grinding your green coffee beans in your grinder or blender and worried about ruining your machines, then, you should consider using a mortar and pestle!

This method may take a lot of time and energy; however, it is still affordable and effective and will do the job. Just start by grinding a few beans at a time and add more as you go and repeat but avoid pressing or crushing too many beans at once. You can also use other tools like a hammer for example.

After grinding your green coffee beans, you are now ready to make your green coffee drink. Just bear in mind the taste and flavour of the coffee will not be that much pleasing like roasted beans but rather acidic and grassy with high levels of caffeine.

To brew a healthy green coffee drink, make sure your beans are medium-fine grind (a powder that has the same consistency as sand), then boil your water (90° C), add your ground coffee into your cup and pour the hot water slowly. Let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then strain the mixture through a fine sieve.

You can also add sugar, honey, caramel, chocolate, lemon, or any sweet flavors you prefer to enhance the taste since green coffee is bitter and contains more acidity.

Final Thoughts

In brief, green coffee beans will not prepare delicious and smooth cups of coffee like roasted beans would do, however, it is worth trying and many people are still brewing and consuming them every day just for their health benefits.

You can try getting a bag of green coffee grounds online as you can also try grinding whole green beans at home, just make sure you use a durable and strong coffee grinder.

However, if you don’t like the taste of green coffee, you can try other alternatives for a better coffee experience, like white espresso coffee for example, which is made with very light roasted coffee beans and tastes very peanutty and grassy.
